A Sheltered Gulf Coast Lagoon

Boca Ciega Bay is a shallow coastal lagoon that separates the St. Petersburg mainland from the chain of barrier islands fronting the Gulf of Mexico. Fed by the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway, its protected, emerald-green shallows make it one of the Tampa Bay region's most navigable inshore waters.

Boating and Bay Life

The bay is a hub of recreational activity, where sailboats, motor yachts, and kayaks share marked channels with fishing skiffs and pleasure cruisers. Private docks and marinas line the surrounding shores, and the steady traffic of vessels gives the view its ever-changing character.

Wildlife of the Shallows

These warm, sheltered waters draw an abundance of marine life. Bottlenose dolphins and manatees are seen gliding through the channels, while pelicans, herons, and other wading birds patrol the seagrass flats and mangrove edges.
