The Southernmost City

This camera looks out over Ushuaia, the capital of Tierra del Fuego and widely regarded as the world's southernmost city. Tin-roofed houses in vivid colours tumble down the hillside toward the shore, a hallmark of this remote Patagonian outpost.

The Beagle Channel

Beyond the town stretches the Beagle Channel, the storied strait that Charles Darwin sailed aboard HMS Beagle. Its steel-grey waters separate the Argentine mainland of the island from the mountainous Chilean shore on the far side.

The Mountains of the End of the World

On the horizon rise the snow-capped peaks of the Fuegian Andes, the final flourish of the great cordillera before it sinks into the Southern Ocean. The interplay of water, town and mountain gives this scene its unmistakable Fin del Mundo character.

A Gateway to Antarctica

Ushuaia is the principal departure port for Antarctic expeditions and a hub for trekking, sailing and wildlife watching. The view captured here is the same one that greets travellers arriving at the edge of the inhabited world.
