The Cruiser Aurora
The Aurora is a Pallada-class protected cruiser built in Saint Petersburg and preserved today as a floating museum. A veteran of the Russo-Japanese War and the Battle of Tsushima, the ship became a lasting symbol of Russian history after its blank shot reportedly signalled the storming of the Winter Palace in 1917.
The Neva River Setting
The camera overlooks the Neva River, where the boundary between the Petrograd and Vyborg districts runs. River traffic, small craft and sightseeing boats pass beneath the wide sky, and the current carries the constant motion that defines life along the embankments of this UNESCO-listed historic city.
Embankment & Cityscape
Facing the ship, the Hotel St. Petersburg and the Pirogovskaya and Petrovskaya embankments extend along the far bank, backed by the low skyline of the northern capital. A landscaped garden with a fountain anchors the foreground, making this one of the most recognisable riverfront vantage points in the city.
