The Kusasenri Plateau
The camera overlooks Kusasenri-ga-hama, a flat grassland basin formed inside an ancient volcanic crater. The treeless pasture stretches toward twin ponds that fill with rainwater, while grazing horses and cattle roam the open meadow that has become an emblem of the Aso highlands.
Mount Aso and Its Caldera
Beyond the plateau rise the central cones of Mount Aso, an active stratovolcano set within one of the planet's largest volcanic calderas. The encircling caldera rim and the smoking crater of Nakadake define this dramatic geothermal landscape in Kyushu.
The Aso Volcano Museum
The camera is mounted at the Aso Volcano Museum, an interpretive center perched on the plateau's edge. Its panoramic vantage point makes it a gateway for visitors exploring the geology, wildlife and dramatic scenery of the surrounding national park.
A UNESCO Global Geopark
The whole region lies within the Aso-Kuju National Park and the Aso UNESCO Global Geopark, prized for its living volcano, rare grassland ecosystem and traditional pastoral landscape maintained by centuries of controlled burning.
