A Royal Square Steeped in Tradition

Alun-Alun Kidul, the "South Square," sits directly behind the Kraton of Yogyakarta, historically reserved for the Sultan's private ceremonies and now open to the public as one of the city's most beloved gathering spaces. Framed by rows of shade trees and low walls, the square retains the ceremonial layout of the old palace complex.

The Twin Banyan Trees

Two large banyan trees, enclosed by a low fence at the plaza's center, are the square's most iconic feature. They are the stage for masangin, a centuries-old test of inner focus in which participants attempt to walk blindfolded from one side of the square to pass directly between the trees — a tradition believed to reveal the purity of one's heart.

Pedal Carts and Community Life

Vendors line the square renting brightly lit pedal-powered carts, a signature Yogyakarta pastime that draws families and groups of friends to circle the open ground. Street food stalls, musicians, and photographers add to the square's role as a social hub for the city.

Part of the Kraton Heritage Complex

As one of the two ceremonial squares flanking the Sultan's palace (alongside the northern Alun-Alun Lor), Alun-Alun Kidul remains tied to Yogyakarta's royal history and Javanese court culture, making it a living landmark within the wider heritage of the Kraton.
